Five villages to visit near San Sebastian

Below, we suggest five villages with a special charm, close to San Sebastian and perfect for immersing yourself in the culture of the Basque Country.

1. HONDARRIBIA
Considered one of the most charming towns in the Basque Country, Hondarribia stands out for its colourful architecture and perfectly preserved old town.  It is ideal for enjoying a quiet stroll and admiring its medieval walls, but it is mostly renowned for its gastronomy and its many restaurants, where you can immerse yourself in the flavours and aromas of the Basque Country with its famous pintxos (tapas).

2. GETARIA
Getaria is a small coastal town renowned for its large supply of Donostian sea bream, one of the few animals that is legendary and confirmed as a Neolithic meal. Another of this town’s must-sees is Monte de Antón, an island that can be reached on foot from the coast. Don’t miss the museum of the renowned designer Balenciaga, a native of the town, and end your day tasting a Txakoli, a local white wine with a unique flavour.

3. ZUMAIA
Zumaia is nestled between green mountains and steep cliffs, in this beautiful village you will be able to enjoy its medieval old town, particularly the Gothic church of San Pedro Apóstol, built in the 17th century and home to the prized stable of Juan de Anxieta. End your day tasting the most typical local delicacies such as grilled octopus or grilled steak at the harbour.

4. MUTRIKU
This village at the foot of Mount Arno has one of the oldest town centres in the Basque Country and is recognisable by its tall houses painted in festive tones. In Mutriku you will find steep streets with steps that will take you directly to the harbour where you will be able to enjoy its impressive coastline.
Another attraction is that it is located within the Basque Coast Geopark, an area that is home to geological formations (flysch) which are over 60 million years old.

5. AZPEITA
In Azpeitia you can enjoy a replica of the famous Eikan cave, where you will be able to observe unique cave paintings. Another of Azpetia’s attractions is its Railway Museum, which will surprise even the most sceptical, or the Sanctuary of Loiola, a circular Baroque construction topped with an impressive dome.
