Avant-garde gastronomy and stays in front of the Bay of Biscay

Legendary gastronomy in Orio and Getaria

During your next stay at Akelarre Hotel, we recommend you visit the neighbouring towns of Orio and Getaria to taste the Donostiarra-style sea bream, considered the king of Basque gastronomy since ancient times. The sea bream from the Bay of Biscay is one of the few animals that hold the status of legendary, with remains in excavations in Scotland that confirm that it was part of the diet in the Neolithic.

The sea bream is a fish with white meat, very tender and with an exquisite flavour that was close to extinction due to overfishing. However, thanks to strict policies to prevent its fishing, the species is slowly recovering.

Although nowadays most of the sea breams come from the Mediterranean, the towns of Orio and Getaria honour this fish so characteristic from our culture and history, by celebrating the Bisiguaren Festa or Bream Festival. During this gastronomic celebration, everybody dines this delicious fish.

Both Orio and Getaria have a well-earned reputation for making one of the best grilled sea breams. If you wish to receive further information, our Reception team will be happy to suggest some places to enjoy this typical dish in one of these locations.
